2005 Hunting Season
2005 was a good year and a OK year at the same time. I finally harvested a buck BIG enough to mount but did not get to spend
as much time in the woods hunting as I would have liked. I did accumulate a lot of property to hunt this year. (Permission to hunt
land privately owned) Just could not find time off from work, family obligations and such. There is always next year!!!!
Big Six Pointer
Shotgun: Mossberg 835 Ultra Mag.
Deer: 6 points (tall brow tines} 15.5" spread
I was hunting on a swamp with a family hunt club. We were driving dogs and I was set up in a nice spot over looking a good
portion of the swamp. This buck was not being ran by the dogs. The buck was sneaking through some hardwoods from behind
the hunters lined on the swamp. The buck slipped down into a drainage between two fingers and stood between me and another
hunter. Neither of us knew he was there. The buck's mistake was to move. I heard movement in the drainage and got ready for
the shot. The big buck came out into the swamp at a low, slow walk. I shot as soon as I had a good shot. The buck kept run into
the swamp and I kept firing. (4 shots total, yes I reloaded) The other hunter shot once. (never found his shot during the field
dressing or skinning) The buck fell over into a creek and was down for good. I let out a yell and went to find the big buck. I found
the deer and immediately knew I would mount him. This buck dressed out around 150-160 lbs. One of the brow tines was broken
earlier in the year. (Will get it fixed during the mount) I can not tell you how excited I was after this hunt.
The year before, one of my brothers (Josh) harvested a nice eight pointer 40 yards away from the spot I got mine. The year
before that Josh harvested his first deer (ever) on the same property
2006 Hunting Season
This year was a good year. Hunted a lot and saw plenty of deer. Nothing was harvested in bow season, one three pointer in
muzzle loading season. Firearm season brought a nice eight pointer with the muzzle loader.
Nice Eight Pointer
Muzzle loader: .50 cal
Deer: 8 points, nice symmetrical rack
I was hunting with Kirk on a piece of land he had hunted all season exclusively. He hunted two-three days a week on this piece
and had seen a nice eight pointer a few times but never got a shot. I knew if I had asked to hunt this piece Kirk would have said
"yes." I joked with Kirk saying "I did not want to hunt the piece until he had finished hunting the 8 pointer, because I did not want
to hunt it and kill his 8 pointer." Well, the first time I got the clearance to hunt it with him, he pushed this 8 pointer to me while
walking to his stand. I was not in my stand 15 minutes when the buck came running right to my stand. I made a bad shot (gut
shot). We tracked the deer .93 of a mile when we stopped tracking for the night. (after 9pm) The next morning we picked up
where we stopped and after 2 hours of tracking found the deer. As it turned out Kirk was not mad, he stated " I'm glad you got
him, if it was anybody else I'd be upset. Mark of a true friend. I killed a deer he had hunted all season, he helped track the deer
until after 9pm that night, got up on Xmas eve morning to help track some more.
